Desperate Man

gustave courbet – desperate man (self portrait)

Absolutely fallen in love with this dramatical painting, I think I will be collecting a few of them. This one feels so real, makes me react. He still doesn’t look too desperate, in a state of not knowing what to do next really.

“How I was made to suffer despair in my youth!”

“the most antisocial, disruptive, indecent artist of them all ”
‘the Mick Jagger of the nineteenth century.’
“Who couldn’t even be bothered to put on a clean shirt when collectors came to call?”

From looking around, most of his females look pretty emotionless, always upset but in such a dull manner. There’s no real drama.

Bohemian, comes to mind 😉

“he fled to Switzerland, where he spent his remaining years in exile.”
